Learning Latin Culture (and Lingo) with Mesobis

If you’ve dropped into the Mesosphere or follow us on social (tap in @MESOBIS), then you know we are a Latin American cannabis brand. Our roots are deeply entrenched in Brazil and Mexico, but we have a big love for all things Latin culture. And now, we have a thriving gomitas brand based in Los Angeles and sharing our culture here has been incredible.

It was a longtime goal of ours to have our THC gummies (gomitas) be synonymous with high-quality cannabis edibles. Whether you’re in a Latin American country looking for gomitas, or in the US shopping for gummies—we want to be that brand for you.

You can learn more about our gomitas here, but today we’re feeling playful (thanks to munching on some Joyful gomitas), so we want to share a bit more about Latin culture, including some of our lingo in the cannabis realm and beyond.

Fun Facts About Latin Culture in the US

Latin culture has massively shaped the American cultural landscape through food, art, music, and literature. Here are a few fun facts about Latin culture and its ever-growing influence in the US.

Growing Influence

Latinos represent 20% of the total US population, and they are the fastest-growing group in the country.

Top States by Latino Population Percentage:

  • New Mexico: 49.8%
  • Texas: 39.9%
  • California: 39.7%
  • Arizona: 32.0%
  • Nevada: 29.6%
  • Florida: 26.5%
  • New Jersey: 21.2%

Latinos are one of the youngest minority groups, and they will add more people to the US population than any other group for the next few decades.

Food and Drink

More tortillas are sold in the US than hotdog and hamburger buns combined. We get it—everyone loves tacos. It’s kind of the perfect food. You have this little handheld ingredient holder, and you can fill it with anything you desire. Savory carnitas? The zesty tang of ceviche?

And let’s not forget about churros. Those cinnamon-sugar-covered sticks of dough bliss are popping up on dessert menus across the US.

Maybe it’s because of the incredible pairing with Latin food, but did you know that the number one beer in America is Mexican? Where are the cannabis/hemp brands at?! On the N/A side, you’ll find lemon water, or cucumber-infused water at spas and restaurants, but it’s sort of a play on agua fresca—typically made with melon, lime juice, water, and a little sweetener.

Musical Influence

Latin music continues to dominate global charts, with artists like Bad Bunny (Puerto Rico) and J Balvin (Colombia) leading the way. These artists are topping the charts and redefining global music trends with their unique sounds and styles. Here are a few more Latin artists worth checking out:

Literature and Art

Latin American literature has produced some of the most celebrated writers in the world. Gabriel García Márquez, with his masterful use of magical realism, has enchanted readers with novels like One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera

Isabel Allende’s evocative storytelling in books like The House of the Spirits has similarly left an indelible mark. These literary giants have brought Latin American stories to the forefront, exploring themes of love, power, and human nature with depth and sensitivity.

The legacy of iconic Latin American artists like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera continues to resonate strongly in the US. Kahlo’s introspective self-portraits and Rivera’s expansive murals have not only captivated art enthusiasts but have also inspired a new generation of artists.

Their works often explored themes of identity, struggle, and resilience, striking a chord with diverse audiences. Museums, galleries, and cultural centers across the country frequently feature exhibitions dedicated to these legendary figures, celebrating their contributions to global art.
